**I type away at my typewriter, the clacking sound a music to my ears. I am typing a letter to my dear friend Betty. She recently came down with a cold and I am writing to try and brighten her day. I write of a recent book I read. Betty has not been able to read for long periods of time with this cold, so a short letter telling her about the book will give her something to do. I type my last word then pull the paper free. I take it with me to my bike and pedal to Betty’s house to drop it off.**
This month, I had the pleasure of reading Spells for Lost Things by Jenna Evans Welch, author of the Love & series, involving Love & Gelato, Love & Luck, and Love & Olives. I read this series over a few years and enjoyed reading the books. I got Spells for Lost Things last year and finally read it as it seemed like a great book for Halloween. It follows a girl named Willow as she travels to Salem, Massachusetts with her mom to settle some family business and learns things about her family history that she never knew before. We have another perspective of Mason who is in the foster care system while trying to find his mom. Their paths cross and together they uncover secrets about Willow’s family and a curse that was placed on them several generations ago.
I actually really enjoyed this book. I liked Love & Gelato when I read it back in 2017/2018, Love & Luck was just fine when I read it in 2021, and I really liked Love & Olives, which I read last year. Even though I liked this series, Jenna Evans Welch was never an author I thought much about. I read Spells for Lost Things, her latest book, and really liked it and it is making me realize how much I enjoy her books. The story was very unique, a contemporary story with a slight fantasy twist with the talk of witchcraft.
I really liked Willow’s story as we watch her uncover her family history. Her mom is distant so watching her meet her family and learn about her past was very fun to see. The aunts were a great addition to the story and added in a few scenes of humor. The scavenger hunt was also fun to watch. Mason’s story was also a good one. I liked the journey he goes on with finding his mom and finding his place in his new foster family. His story also had some emotional moments which added an extra layer to the story. Something else that stood out was the house. I like how the house had an effect on Willow and Mason. It made the house have a magic feel to it. This was an entertaining read about family, magic, and reconnecting.
Overall, this was a good story in both perspectives. I enjoyed watching the adventures and mysteries Willow and Mason were involved in and I was never bored. I recommend giving this a read.
If you read until the end, leave a flower emoji in the comments. If you have read the book, you’ll understand:)🌹🌺
