**The book shop is looking for a few reviews, so I think of all my recent reads and pen my own. I write about a book I read recently and try to discuss every aspect. As I write, my candle light glows brighter as the sun sinks low. Eventually, as I finish my last word, the candle has all but died out and I watch as wax drips down, almost staining my parchment.**
When I first started my blog, I wanted to do at least one review per month, but I haven’t really stuck to that since I really like to write about other things like hauls, recommendations, and basically everything other than reviews for some reason. I want to make an effort to stick with one review a month, so for February, we are looking at the second book I read this month, which is The Match by Sarah Adams.
The Match was originally an indie published book but was picked up by a traditional publisher and rereleased last year. It’s an adult romance that follows twenty-six year old Evie Jones who works with service dogs. One day, she meets Jacob Broaden to find a match for his daughter Samantha who has epilepsy, just like her, but they don’t get along at first. As Evie starts to spend more time with Jacob, she starts to fall for him and finds a family in him and Sam.
I have wanted to read this book for quite a while now but never picked it up. I’m actually glad I waited though because I was able to get the traditional version since it has been revised and expanded. I must say, this was actually a pretty good book. I tabbed a lot of moments in this because I kept finding parts I liked.
Starting with the characters, I liked Evie. I like that she didn’t back down when she first met Jacob and I like her dedication to her job. I will judge her decision to snoop around Jacob’s house, but that’s just me. Jacob was also a great character in this and my favorite parts with him were in his interactions with his daughter, Sam. It was so interesting to watch him navigate his relationship with his daughter as a recent single dad and there were so many cute moments with those two. Sam was also sweet and had a few good moments. I also liked Evie’s interactions with Sam since it shows her growing relationship with Jacob and Sam. Evie and her boss also had a great relationship and it was great to see that mother figure for Evie.
Something about romances that I usually have a problem with is the lack of plot. I get bored and feel like that the whole story is the romance and that there is no plot involved. That’s why I always like YA, since it feels like there is still plot in a romance book. However, I was actually very entertained by this book and didn’t feel bored or rushed to reach the end. The pacing seemed well done and the book was short enough to not drag on. The service dog aspect was also new for me. I have never read a book with service dogs or characters with epilepsy so it was interesting to read about and I learned a few things too.
Bonus points to this book for the communication. Evie and Jacob had some great communication in this book and I really appreciated that aspect. It was very refreshing to see in a world of miscommunication tropes. There is a bit of miscommunication towards the end, but it makes sense why it happens and is resolved quickly. The rest of the time they are pretty good communicators.
If you are looking for a fun, cute, funny read, I recommend checking this one out. I found so many moments to love in here, whether that was in the romance, funny lines from the characters, or in those sweet moments with either Jacob or Evie with Sam. I plan on checking out more by Sarah Adams in the future. If you have read any of her books, I would love to hear which ones you’ve read and your thoughts.
xoxo,
