**I spotted an old teacher of mine at the shoppes and we had a nice chat of where life has taken us and of all our adventures since last meeting. We sat at a coffeehouse and shared a nice pot of tea, the wisteria and ivy climbing up the walls around us, with only one other table filled. We discuss all matters and finally part ways after our chat.**
A few weeks ago, I learned that this week was teacher appreciation week. In honor of that, I thought we could discuss some books that could be recommended that either is about teachers or correlates to the subject they teach. Let’s start with some of the main subjects then move onto specials.
English teacher:
- Faking Christmas by Cindy Steel – This book actually follows two English teachers. Olive, our main character, is an English teacher at her school and does not like the English teacher across from her class, Miles. A week away with her family should mean a week away from Miles, but Olive ends up having to fake-date Miles during her trip. This is actually indie published and a book that I would definitely recommend checking out. I usually skip the prologue when reading a sample of the book, but I didn’t for this one and the prologue is actually what made me read it. A book following two rival English teachers is a great recommended read for one.
History teacher:
- The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe – This is a ya historical fiction based on a true story of a girl’s time in Auschwitz. WWII was always a very prevalent topic in history courses, so I think that this story would be a great read for a history teacher. It was emotional and well written and a story that anyone could appreciate.
Science teacher:
- The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes – Okay, hear me out. This is not the conventional science book, but I think that it would be great for science more related to forensics and psychology. This is a ya mystery series following teens with unique abilities that work for the FBI. There are two profilers, a girl good at math, a boy who reads emotions, and a girl who can detect lies. The FBI aspect as well as the teens’s gifts would make for a great read for anyone in the psychology or forensics science fields.
Librarian:
- Funny Story by Emily Henry – I always said Beach Read was my favorite Emily Henry, but I think that Funny Story beat it out. This follows a librarian getting over a breakup who moves in with her ex’s new girlfriend’s ex. I really enjoyed this book and I loved getting to see Daphne, our main character, at work in the library. We actually get several scenes where she is at work and it was really fun to see. I had never read a book about a librarian before and it makes me want to find more.
Art teacher:
- Doodleville by Chad Sell – This is actually a middle grade graphic novel I read a few years ago, but it was really cute! It’s about a girl whose doodles get loose from her notebook. I think this would be a great rec for an art teacher for two reasons: One, it’s a graphic novel so an art teacher could appreciate the art style, but two, it follows a young girl who likes to draw.
Music teacher:
- Jukebox by Nadhi Chanani – I had a bit of a harder time with this one. There are of course books that have music, but I wasn’t sure what to recommend. Jukebox follows two girls who get transported to different decades based on what music is playing on the Jukebox. The music and time travel make me think this would be a great recommendation.
General:
- Flirty Little Secret by Jessica Lepe – This one is about a guidance counselor and a history teacher who know each other in person and through online identities. While not my favorite, I wanted to throw in some books about teachers for teacher appreciation week.
- Because of Mr.Terupt by Rob Buyea – This is a middle grade story about a group of kids in the same class who are all different with a teacher that gets through to all of them until an accident happens. I really enjoyed this book when I read it and it really highlights that relationship between students and their teacher.
I hope you all found some great recs and enjoyed reading. I did end up skipping books for math and gym teachers because I apparently have NOT read anything that would match for that. So if anyone has ideas, let me know. I could not really think of anything I have read that would fit. Hope you all have a great day, and I’ll see you soon.
xoxo,
