**Music plays on the street near the shops. It drifts through each store and patrons dance in the streets on their way past. I step inside a few shoppes and purchase a few things I need. A hummingbird flies past flowers and hovers over it before flying a way, flapping its wings to the beat of the music. Once I have everything I need, I make my way back home.**
A few years ago, Book Riot made conversation cards about books called Lit Chat: Conversation Starters About Books & Life. I’ve had them for a few years now and haven’t really looked through them much, so I thought that this could be a great place to discuss some of the cards. Each card has a question about your bookish preferences and tendencies and a followup question to go along with it. I’m going to just select a few at random and discuss.
π “One morning, you open your closet to discover that it is actually a portal into the world of one of your favorite books. Which literary world is it?”
This is actually a pretty easy one for me. I would definitely choose Emberfall from Brigid Kemmerer’s Cursebreakers series. A Curse So Dark and Lonely is one of my all time favorite books. Not only was the story engaging, but the world was just my favorite. It has a very magical feel like an old Disney movie. I could easily picture everything and I love the kingdom setting with places like the Crooked Boar Inn and Ironrose Castle. If I could, I would also love to spend time with the characters.
π “Do you ever re-read books? Why or why not?” Follow-up: “Are there any specific titles you return to regularly? What makes you go back to them?”
I very rarely re-read books. I like to explore new ones and I can’t read new ones if I am always re-reading. Plus, I always fear not liking the book as much. I have only re-read a few books, either because I had to for some reason or a handful that I liked and don’t think I would feel differently for. One that I have re-read multiple times is The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson. I have read that book four times now. It’s not even much of a plot-driven story, but I think it just feels real with depth and emotion and something about it just sticks with me.
π “Do you finish every book you start? What makes you stop reading a book?”
Unfortunately, I am someone that almost always finishes every book I start. I always wonder if it will get better and if I’ll regret not finishing it. I usually only give up when I am very bored and truly don’t think it will get any better.
π “How do you treat your books? Do you make notes in them? Dog-ear pages? Or do you keep every page absolutely pristine?” Follow-up: “If you do make notes in your books, have you ever gone back and looked at them?”
I would love to annotate sometimes, but I’m that person that keeps everything pristine. I never dog-ear either. I do however tab my books. I love to look back at my favorite quotes, favorite moments, or something I found funny. I have only fully annotated five books. I did have fun with it, but I don’t want to annotate it and not like it. Plus, I just prefer the pages clean.
π “Do you have a to-be-read pile? (No one will judge you if it’s an actual pile.)” Follow-up: “How do you keep track of your reading queue? Name three books you have on your list.”
Umm, yes I do have a TBR pile. I think there’s like 35 books on it right now (yet for some reason I just read books from the library). I keep all of these on a small bookshelf that may or may not overflow onto the floor next to it. I also keep a list of them on my notes app so I can more easily see them all, and in order of when I got them. Though I also have a large note with all the books I want to read but don’t own. Three of the books on my TBR are The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys, the oldest book on my TBR, Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson, my current read and one of the newest on my TBR, and Thicker Than Water by Brigid Kemmerer, by one of my favorite authors.
There are a lot of cards in the deck, but these are just a few. I think these are really fun and are probably great for book clubs. How would you answer these?
